Wilkinson and Blain on Podium at Beverbeek Classic
Ian Wilkinson and Alexandre Blain finished on the podium today at the Beverbeek Classic in Beglium after Blain had spent much of the stage away in breaks.
Just 10km into the 170km long stage, Rob Partridge was the first rider to make a move stick and managed to gain almost 30 seconds on the peloton. After 10km of pushing on alone against the wind, Partridge was swallowed up by the bunch.
Alexandre Blain was next to go on the attack and although the numbers in the move were soon whittled down, the break stuck and soon gained several minutes on the main field.
As race moved onto into the final three of seven laps of the 8.2km finishing circuit, Blain attacked again to launch a long solo run for the line. Meanwhile, Wilkinson had made it into a ten strong chase group and as closed the gap, Blain was able to latch onto this group, despite a day of hard attacking.
Coming to the line, Wilkinson looked good for victory, but was just pipped by Tom Van Asbroeck (Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator). Blain capped a fine day by coming in 3rd.
Speaking to VeloUK.net, Ian said:
I went at the right time and the boy Asbroeck just piped me on the line. I was about fifth wheel and with 200 metres to go I went and hit the front and it was really good. I’m over the moon. Only a month ago I was thinking it would be nice if I could ride my bike let alone race after being off in the winter with a bad knee so it was a good comeback.
